N900 - is it the hardware or the software that makes it so good?

Carlton Lindow Jr has posed an interesting question over at his E65 Blog which doesn’t exactly cover the title of the page, but is worth considering even so.
In conversations he has had with fellow enthusiasts, Carlton has heard various opinions on the N900 - but there’s a dichotomy. Some people are saying the Maemo software is ‘the future’, others the hardware - like an ‘iPhone with a real QWERTY’. He can’t make up his mind, but asks for comments so he can gather opinion.
