Skype on the Nokia N800
June 28th, 2007 at 11:31 pm
Mobile device blogger jkontherun has just been in NYC for the Digital Experience Show. Whilst he was there he had a quick look at the Nokia booth and was very pleased to see a demonstration of Skype on the N800, available to download sometime in July.
RogerS, of Internet Tablet Talk, was keen to note that there is a “Buy Skype credit” option in the picture, which may mean calls to normal landlines and cellphones. Are you excited or are you doubtful? Make a comment for jkontherun or join in the Internet Tablet Talk discussion to let them know.

I have a dream for an internet tablet like the N800. I would like it to have a USB port that accepts a USB EVDO modem. That way I could have one modem (and account). This would give a person a lot of flexibility. When I am at home or my vacation house I could plug the USB modem into a evdo/wifi router like the KR1000 from kyocera and have wifi for everyone in the house. When I have to travel with my laptop I can use the evdo modem with my laptop. When I travel without my laptop - just my N800 - I can bring along the EVDO modem and have high speed almost anywhere (in the US). My ultimate dream? Have the N800 tablet work as an access point - like my mac laptop can! We are sooooo close

EVDO has got to be on the development list for this appliance somewhere…Clearly that’s the “missing piece” if you are paying $60/month for an EVDO subscription. Sure you can rig an EVDO connection through a router or laptop, but that’s not going to give you the Sprint anywhere anytime connectivity the mobile user really wants.
It would have been nice had Nokia included 802.11a compatibility as well, but there are probably some good reasons why they didn’t. One might be tempted to think that the successor to the N800 could offer 802.11n and be done with connectivity issues…but I doubt it.
If you think about the drawbacks of mobile wifi (someone else’s connection, security issues with “fake” APs, Earthlink’s city wifi is still sporadic coverage, etc), EVDO is really the answer. For example, if I drive from Bellingham, WA to Mesquite, NV maybe I will find some wifi in Southern Idaho or Northern Utah. More likely to find EVDO coverage off the Interstate, even if the signal is a bit weak.
Imagine carrying your mini-USB EVDO with portable antenna to top of Mt. Baker, in late July and making a Skype call to Europe for free…How about from a boat in the inside passage?
Would those combinations be a working substitute for a sat phone? Are EVDO + tablet internet + Skype competitors to usually outrageous global sat phone fees?
