N810 gets mixed reception
January 31st, 2008 at 5:52 pm
Scott Colvey of Mobile Computer has reviewed the N810 internet tablet, and it’s a mixed result for the Nseries device.
The in-depth review, along with a good selection of photos, does consider the N810 to do what it sets out do - browse the web - very well, enjoying the browser and screen for surfing the web as well as the kick-stand. Unfortunately this is about all they like, with lack of phone functionality, to pick up data at the very least, as well as the poor GPS top of the list of gripes.
In the end however, Scott thinks that were it not for the iPhone, the N810 would seem a fantastic piece of kit. As it is though, there are just too many things the N810 doesn’t do well enough to be considered a major player. What do you think? Jump over to leave your comments.

The N810 is without doubt the best way to casually browse the web when on the road or for a quick browse around the house.
Like all devices the N810 will stand or fall based on the software and services available to it, and currently these are few and far between.
It’s clear that this device could be a great success if Nokia put some effort behind it. Right now it’s more raw hardware and platform than complete solution.
There are many apps already on the N810 which show geat promise and highlight what’s possible such as the Internet Radio, Last.fm (Vagalume), Skype, Media Streamer & Player, and of course the core internet browser and email client.
All these apps are pretty raw, but I’m expecting them to evolve quickly this year. That is if the new Trolltech integration doesn’t completely mess it up and put a spanner in how this platform is developing.
Clear lacks are PIM, syncing with Outlook, half decent Word processor, slightly underpowered (but good enough for most things). Woeful GPS, rubbish Wayfinder software.
The hardware platform, with the keyboard is great and a big step up from any phone when it comes to mobile internet, but nowhere near as good as a nicely specced Sony ultra portable, but then this device does fit comfortably in your pocket.
