The N810 in education

March 19th, 2008 at 4:18 pm

James Clay over at the Glossy - MoLeNET blog has been testing the N810 as part of the Glossy project that aims to support development of mobile learning at Gloucestershire FE College in the UK (you can read more about it on the blog).

He’s been impressed by the device overall, with the browsing experience and keyboard proving comfortable, and easy to use. He was also impressed by the battery life. Playing video wasn’t so hot, with flash based video online proving jerky, but overall James thinks it is a great portable device to assist learning. That said, he feels the device would not be robust enough to stand up to the kind of uses a college student might put it through.

What are your thoughts? Can the N810 be a useful educational tool? Jump over to leave your comments.

I’ve noticed that the N810 attempts to play Flash videos at 30 frames per second (fps), the rate they were programmed for, rather than automatically downshifting them to a more manageable 15 fps. The device plays video that’s been transcoded to 15 fps excellently!

So when you watch Flash videos on the N810, you should manually change the quality setting to a bit lower, and the playback will be much better.

[...] Read that blog entry. What was useful for me about this was the comment on the blog about improving flash video performance on the Nokia N810. For me this is why blogging about the project is useful as there are lots of other people out there that are using these devices and we can learn a lot from them. [...]
