Ovi Share updates – maps and geotagging

May 14th, 2008

The space is swimming with this news, so we just thought we’d grab a few of the stories and digest them here.

Steve Litchfield from All About Symbian reported that ‘as part of the Ovi brand’ users can now plan routes on their desktops and then synchronise with their devices. Conversely, if you’re out and about, recording ‘points of interest’ on your handset, then transferring them back to the PC has been enabled. Vaibhav Sharma over at The Symbian Blog also carries the story, and comments that it is ‘great news’ that shows how ‘serious’ Nokia are about becoming an internet company.

Sticking with Vaibhav and Steve, the former brings news that Share on Ovi will now recognise if a photo has embedded GPS information and will display a map. Vaibhav has a couple of suggestions for improvements, though, such as a better desktop uploader and the ability to open images in a new window for easier browsing. Steve reckons this addition brings Ovi Share ‘into the same ball game as Flickr and Picasa Web’, and welcomes suggestions for improvements.

So if you have any thoughts and want to air them, jump over and let Steve know. Comments about either of the above topics would also be welcome on Vaibhav’s site.
