N810 not quite hitting the mark

July 23rd, 2008

A couple of guys have been taking a look at the N810 for a few days, and have posted their thoughts on various aspects of the device.

Meraj Chhaya from PhoneReport has been testing the connectivity of the device, and is less than impressed with its GPS capabilities (although he is quick to assure the reader that this has nothing to do with internet). Connectivity is the ‘very highlight’ of internet tablets according to Meraj, and he found there was a disappointing ‘lag’ when Flash content is found. It was the GPS that let Meraj down the most though, as he was ‘looking forward to enjoying the large touchscreen’. As it happened, finding a GPS lock was difficult unless the device was permanently upright (cool for a car mount, not so good if you’re hiking – he says to ‘forget about it’).

At the same time, Andrew Currie has posted on his blog about how he chose the N810 over the iPod touch without even seeing the Nokia device, and isn’t sure now that he made the right decision. Productivity-wise, the N810 beats the Apple ‘hands down’ as the keyboard beats the virtual competitor by ‘orders of magnitude’. For coding and beta testing, the NIT proved a challenge, with Andrew managing to come up against problems repeatedly. So he’s unsure as to whether he should take up the challenge and pursue the N810, or switch to an Apple device.

What do you think Andrew should do? Do you have any N810 tips and tricks he should know about? Anything you’ve tried with your NIT that will help Meraj get a better GPS lock? Jump over to either page and leave a comment for the guys.
