E71 predictive text a ‘joy’

July 27th, 2008 at 10:33 am

Over on The Symbian Blog, Vaibhav Sharma has been getting to grips with the keypad of the E71, and he reckons that for those who are large of thumb, this device includes a little godsend…

Due to the ‘size hit’ that the E71 has taken over larger devices (such as the E61i and the E90), the keypad and keys are necessarily smaller than on the larger E-series devices. This forces those users with bigger fingers to adjust to the smaller layout, something that can be tricky. Vaibhav however, reckons the predictive text function of the E71 is the key to preventing him from returning to a device with more keypad real estate. The auto-complete function works on many words simply by hitting the space bar, and there is often a good selection of words to choose from. All potential changes easily selected and inputted making typing a breeze. When a mistake has been made, the E71 ‘happily fixes spellings’ and enables much faster typing. Without this predictive option, Vaibhav reckons that he’d find the E71 ‘very hard to use’ and wouldn’t ‘give it a second look’ so this is certainly a key feature.

Are you in the same boat as Vaibhav? Has the E71’s predictive function saved it from being confined to your ‘useless devices’ drawer? Head over to his site and leave him a comment.

For all those who are planing to purchase a Nokia phone — E series are a very good choice but beware, NOKIA has a very pathetic service centre. My personal experience has been such. My E62 software was giving problems and I needed to upgrade it, also my joystick had become feather touch so I went to the service centre (5 days before my warranty expired). Their reply was water has entered the set and so the warranty is void (they even told this to people whose set was 5 days old - I was present there). When asked how water could have entered, their reply was when I was speaking on the phone, sweat from my ears has entered. Then they kept the phone for over a month without doing anything and when I had a huge argument with then, they returned the set, else they were not even willing to return the set!!

Also when I emailed Nokia about this, their reply was, ‘your email was too long and has got truncated. If the service centre says that water has entered, then the warranty is void’!! What nonsence. They don’t bother to verify anything!

So beware of the service centres. The sets are good and they make up with lousy service centres.

By the way, I am from Kolkata, India.

Regards

Avinash

Predictive text on E72 is broken, it gives completely wrong options like:
- DUDE / NUDE
- TEST / PEST

Atleast it should give options starting with what you have typed, this is very bad.
