‘Ultimate’ device chat – set your fantasy free

Over at Symbian Freak, Kulin has posted on the debate that is raging about the ‘ultimate’ device – what it would look like and what it could do.

He reckons that this year has been a lull in the ‘two year cycle’ that device development goes through, and next year will see the ‘revival of the megapixel race’. The fact remains that in 2008, users still have to cope with QVGA screens (which is ‘inconvenient’ for the 2.6/2.8” screen) and Kulin thinks analogue TV tuners should be included in devices by now. However, he says that if the ultimate device is released (and whether that needs to actually happen is a whole different debate), then the ‘drive for innovation dies’ and a downward trend will start. On the SF forum, Edmuna thinks the ‘ultimate’ device will include an 8.2 MP camera, a 3.2” screen and a QWERTY slider (like a beefed up N95 – which was everyone’s ultimate not so long ago!). More realistically, Alestes wants a small candybar with a ‘decent’ camera and xenon flash, and maybe a touch screen with a stylus.
