Nokia Nseries vs. iPhone

August 23rd, 2008

Dameon, the Phoneboy, has posted his thoughts on the Nokia vs. iPhone debate, and comes down firmly in the Finnish camp.

Claiming that the Nokia devices – specifically the N95 8GB and the N82 – are media-generating, a game that the iPhone, with its inferior camera and ‘hard’ typing experience, can’t play. He claims the Apple product is a media consumption device –good at taking things in, but not so good at making them. He references Alec Saunders as saying that that iPhone and Nokia devices are like hammers and screwdrivers, ‘different tools that do different things’.

What do you think? Are you solely a Nokia fan or open to other devices? Jump over and let Dameon know which camp you fall into.

I’ve said all along that the main features that set the Nseries apart from the iPhone are:

    1. The Nseries and S60 is a true smartphone, unlike the iPhone. Without multitasking, the iPhone requires a linear workflow, meaning it can’t walk and chew bubblegum. Opposingly, the Nseries phones allow a congruous, parallel workflow for more efficiency and productivity.

    2. Nseries smartphones can usually be operated with one hand, whereas the iPhone requires you give up your free hand to use it. So the Nokia will give active users freedom to do more, while the Apple steals productivity.

    3. The Apple device is centered around a great media experience. The Nokias are centered around content experience AND creation.

So the Nseries phones do all the iPhone can do, plus more, all at once, while giving you freedom to do other things with your free hand as well. Your mother always said she can’t do 20 things at once and keep everyone happy, but luckily, my N95 8gb can.

These three things are usually overlooked by the iPhone curious, but noticed when its too late.

I’ve been a Nokia user since my first mobile phone that I got for my 13th Birthday (it was stolen about two weeks later!)

I’ve then been backwards and forwards between other handsets and Nokia’s but always seem to come back to the Nokia’s - I find them easy to use - Even my Mum and my Grandad have Nokia’s because they are easier to use.

I decided that I was going to get an iPhone and 6 months into my contract I am a little concerned about how little the iphone has improved with each update.

I am tempted to go to the second hand electronic store in town to exchange my iPhone for an N95 (and pay the £30 difference ish) - is this a good move or am I going to regret it?

Or should I just stick with the iPhone or upgrade to the the 3G?

Or stuff the lot and go for a completely different make?
