N85 vs. N96

Migs has posted another of his spec comparison articles over at Migsmobile, and this one leaves him baffled as to the point of the N96.
He has discovered by comparing the specs that the N96 has a slightly higher camera resolution, but the N85 has a better focal length and enhanced micro-optics, giving ‘better illumination’ when it is needed. USB charging and better battery life of the N85 give it the edge, and Migs concludes that the newer device should be the winner.

but why would anyone even bother doing this kinda comparison?
isnt it common sense that MOST of the time newer things tend to be better?
