5800 XpressMusic – much better than first thought
December 2nd, 2008
Dotsisx has been playing with the Nokia 5800 for some time now, and has finally brought us her considered thoughts on the Symbian Guru pages.
Having first had a pre-release version in her hands, she was impressed by the screen of the one she has had recently, saying it is ‘super duper responsive’. Contrary to others who have said that the tactile feedback is annoying, she says it is ‘really nice’ and easy to get used to. She publishes some pics of the handset in comparison to other devices to give an idea of the size.
What are your impressions of the 5800? Managed to get your hands on one yet? Head over and let Dotsisx know.

Nokia N97 introduced - ‘5800 on steroids’
December 2nd, 2008
Launched in the last few minutes at Nokia World, the Nokia N97 pulls together all the features that have been asked for by voices in the space.
With a large (640×360 pixel, 16 million color) touchscreen that has tactile feedback, a slide out QWERTY keyboard and a screen that tilts to 35 degrees (using a clicking hinge), the N97 pulls together aspects of other devices in Nokia’s range. The device also contains a high quality built in Carl Zeiss camera, 30 fps DVD quality video, A-GPS and accelerometer much as you would expect from a high end device, but will also contain 64 GB 32GB of memory with 16GB card slot .
Already out in the space, Eric Zeman from PhoneScoop has some images of the device, which looks like a prototype (the handset presented was silver in color, but this version is black). He shares his hands on thoughts (calling it the ‘5800 on steroids’), so head over and have a look, ask any questions you might have, and leave your thoughts.

Collected 5800 thoughts
December 1st, 2008
A couple of people out in the space have shared their latest findings on the 5800 XpressMusic.
Rafe (along with screenshots aplenty) casts his eyes over the software capabilities of the handset. He says the menus and lists will be ‘instantly recognisable to S60 users, but take advantage of the touchscreen and higher resolution. Over at Nokia inside, meanwhile, there are some more general observations along with some pics of the device.
What are your impressions of the 5800? Is it a welcome attempt at touchscreen by Nokia? Head through either of the links above to have your say.

5800 multimedia functions
November 26th, 2008
All About Symbian’s Rafe has brought us his thoughts on the multimedia capabilities of the 5800, and it is packed with screen shots and opinion.
He reckons the device maintains the standard of the manufacturer in creating ‘feature-rich’ handsets, and says it is no surprise that it is an ‘extremely capable’ music player. The camera is ‘middle of the road’ and will suffice for the odd shot but will never match the performance of the N82 and N95.
There’s plenty more to get your teeth into, so go have a read, then leave any comments you have on anything Rafe said.

Nokia issued with a ‘to do’ list
November 24th, 2008
The Renegade Fanboy has come up with a wish list of improvements and innovations that he’s looking for Nokia to implement in the coming weeks and months.
Some of them are to do with devices and limiting the number of releases in each year. He reckons that there should be two N- and two Eseries per 12 months. He also implores the manufacturer to ensure that all devices are made released with USB charging. Many of the suggestions are quite enlightening, so head over and see what you think, then add any more you’re desperate to see.

5800 XpressMusic to take the iPhone crown?
November 21st, 2008
Over at the S60Blog, Ani has posed an interesting question in which he askes whether Nokia’s 5800 XpressMusic can steal a march on the iPhone in certain markets.
Coming from an Indian perspective, he says there is a gap in the market now that the ‘initial euphoria’ of the iPhone has died down. The 5800 couples touchscreen with the ‘functionality and simplicity’ of Symbian, and looks like ‘a beauty’. He lists why he thinks the iPhone will fail in the Indian market, and reckons Nokia can learn from Apple’s mistakes.
Having read Ani’s opinions, can you add any of your own observations? Add your thoughts to the comment stream and see if others agree.

Better box experience please, Nokia – users speak
November 19th, 2008
Darla Mack, the Mobile Diva, has voiced an opinion that is held by other major players, that of the ‘out of box’ device experience not quite being what it should be (she refers to her N96, but it could apply across the board).
She lists a few things that could be done to help users - a welcome card urging new owners to register their device, which once done introduces new services such as Ovi to the user. She’d also like to see the manufacturer citing pages and forums giving users hints and tips on how to fine tune their device. Ricky Cadden has chipped in on the comment stream mentioning a simple ‘Quick S60’ guide for newcomers.
What would you like to see in a device’s box? Any ideas to ease the user experience? Head over and join in the comments.
