Open At Own Risk – opened

August 8th, 2008

Scott Janousek brings us news on his blog of his success with the recent Open At Own Risk ‘conundrum’ that has been entertaining/frustrating the space for weeks now.

Having just got wind of the code breaking/weirdest video clip ever exposing mind breaker recently, Scott got hooked and was determined to crack it. He reckons it’s actually a very clever way of getting users to familiarise themselves with Nokia’s Download! service, and also gets you to interact with both your device and your PC at the same time – something not all of us do. So, is this just a clever marketing ploy or a nice addition to the web?

Having read Scott’s post, what do you think? Have you cracked the codes and seen the clip yet? Head over and let him know how you’ve been getting on.

we:offset – more opinion

August 7th, 2008

Following yesterday’s post from Mark Guim on the we:offset app, the ripple has spread around the space and more voices are speaking out.

Steve Litchfield
at All About Symbian thinks it is a ‘worthy’ release, yet can’t help but think it’s all come a bit too late. Tzer2 has commented, although she says that often the excuse for inaction is that no one else is doing anything, so why should you? Teo has also posted the Nokia press release at Symbian Freak, and the more people read the message, the more are likely to make use of this app to reduce – or at least offset – their carbon footprint.

Will you be downloading this app and working out exactly how much carbon you need to offset? Do you need any more details on it? Ask Steve, or join in the SF forum discussion.

Adventures with a Mac - from a long time S60 user

August 6th, 2008

Hot on the heels of the recent release of Missing Sync, Steve Litchfield from All About Symbian looks at how to get your S60 device to talk to a Mac, through the eyes of a ‘Mac virgin’.

The first step he attempted was to tether his devices to the laptop, and it turned out to be a surprisingly easy experience. Bluetooth pairing was extremely straightforward and quick, and whilst Steve had to install some software before he could properly sync the device with the laptop, this too didn’t take a long time using the in-built iSync.

Have you managed to sync your device with your Mac? Did you have any problems? Head over and leave a comment for Steve.

we:offset – environmentally friendly app

August 6th, 2008

Over at The Nokia Blog, Mark Guim has posted about the latest app from Nokia.

we:offset calculates the carbon dioxide emissions from travel, and allows users to donate the appropriate amount to projects that help reduce greenhouse gases. By inputting destinations or airport codes, the app gives the user the option to donate directly from the device to the project, assuaging the guilt of long haul travel in one easy process.

Have you used this app to offset your travel? What do you think of the environmental impact of an app like this? Jump over and let Mark know your thoughts.

Porting your T9 dictionary to a new device

August 5th, 2008

Hot on the heels of his post on which device is the fastest for sending messages, Vaibhav Sharma posts on The Symbian Blog about porting the words you have taught your device over to a new handset.

Having spent the time inputting the new words, Vaibhav says a ‘major annoyance’ is losing them when a user switches devices. His handy ‘how to’, including which apps to load to facilitate an easy port, is a great place to start if you’ve never tried exchanging info between devices before.

Did this work for you? Is there anything else you need help with when switching devices? Head over and ask Vaibhav any questions you may have.

Missing Sync says hello to S60

July 30th, 2008

The space is abuzz today with news of Missing Sync, the software that allows S60 devices to be synced with Apple Macs.

Steven Sande
from tuaw.com reports that everything from contacts to texts to calendar entries will mesh, and with the ‘unique feature’ of Proximity Syncing your Mac and your device will automatically share information if they come within the required distance of each other. On Symbian Freak, Teo says users ‘won’t ever need to remember to sync again’ due to this feature, a boon for all the busy people out there for whom syncing is a once a month thing. Archiving all your calls and messages will help when you’re sorting out your billing, or just seeing when you ‘last called your Mom’.

So will you use this software? Do you think it will make your life easier? Head over to either of the sites above and share your thoughts with the guys.

E51 unboxing and review

July 3rd, 2008

Norman John from Symbian World has got his E51, and isn’t afraid to show it!

In a review liberally scattered with photos of what’s in the box and the usual ‘every angle possible’ shots, Norman brings us his thoughts on all the aspects of the device. In short, he reckons it’s a ‘perfect mid-tier device’, but expands on each area at length. From ‘pretty good’ first impressions, to having the device in his hands and loving the ‘nobbly’ feel of the stainless steel and plastic combination, via screenshots and a discussion of usage, this really is an exhaustive look at the device, and extremely handy if you’re looking for a new business handset.

Is there anything missing from the E51 that Norman John hasn’t covered? What do you think of the device? Be sure to head over and let him know what you think of his review.

E51 gets a quick once over

July 2nd, 2008

Jon – on his blog – brings us what he claims to be a ‘quick’ review of the E51, but actually turns out to be a quite extensive look at the handset.

Build quality gets the thumbs up as Jon says it is ‘excellent’, praising the use of stainless steel and saying it ‘surpasses’ high end models like the N95. He says the ‘very slim’ and ‘lightweight’ device doesn’t compromise the ‘toughness’ (as he’s found out by dropping it twice with no dents or scratches). The processor speed and spare RAM means that navigating ‘demanding’ websites ‘isn’t a chore’ and the screen performs well indoors and out. That said, there are a few minor gripes – the camera quality, the 2.5mm headphone jack, FP1, no built-in GPS. Jon’s overall verdict, however, is that the E51 is a ‘very appealing’ device that has been held back from perfection by the minor issues listed above.

Have you managed to get a look at an E51 yet? What do you think? What would you like to see improved? Is it the perfect device for you? Let Jon know by heading over there.
