E51 takes the place of the N82

September 3rd, 2008

Dr Anirudh Sharma of the S60 Blog has taken his E51 to a conference, specifically choosing this device so it wouldn’t spoil the line of his suit.

Seriously, he reckons the device was perfect for his needs, and making the switch from Nseries (N82) to Eseries was easy due to the ‘unisex’ GUI. The long battery life helps, as does the ‘really good’ screen resolution and the fact that the device is power-packed meant he didn’t miss his N82. There is a neat gallery of device images, and Anirudh reckons he could get by using this device without relying on any Nseries tricks.

Do you agree that the E51 can replace an Nseries device? What would you miss if you swapped? Head over and share your thoughts.

E51 – it’s ‘fab’

September 1st, 2008

Over at DooYoo, user depurple2 has been looking at the E51 since her previous device went to ‘mobile heaven’.

She says it’s ‘nice to look at’ and ‘feels well made’ and she also likes the keypad, saying the keys are not too small ‘that you keep pressing the wrong ones’. Although the camera is only 2MP, it takes an ‘adequate’ pic, and the battery power was more than sufficient for her needs. She summarises by saying it is a great device that is ‘easy to use’.

Do you agree with depurple2? Are there any more functions you’d like to see explored? Head over and rate her review and leave a comment.

E51 envy

August 28th, 2008

Ewan from SMS Text News has posted about his desire to switch to an E51, and asks if he thinks it is a good idea.

Recently browsing the ‘work’ devices, he was seriously tempted by the slimline E51, especially as the E90 he currently ‘lugs’ around ‘interferes with the lines of one’s suit’. He wants a new device, a ‘smaller, lighter’ one, but one which still has the features he’s used to – namely Mail for Exchange. Is the E51 his best bet?

If you think it is, head over and let him know. If you don’t, leave him a comment telling him why not.

Best video player for S60?

August 27th, 2008

Scott Janousek, posting on his blog, has brought his readers a digest of some of the best S60 flash video players (rather than just video file players like DivX) on the market.

EmTube gets a mention, along with screen shots and the assertion that it is Scott’s favourite – he likes the UI and says it is a ‘nice native S60’ player. MobiTubia also gets the thumbs up for being ‘simple but effective’, but FLVPlayer didn’t seem to work for him. He mentions a few other options, including an appeal to his readers asking if they have developed a video player of their own.

Can you help Scott in his appeal? Which video player is your favourite? Jump in and have your say.

Keep track of your device with Phonelocator

August 22nd, 2008

Rafe from All About Symbian and Apoc from Symbian Freak have both reported on the new Phonelocator app that helps you geo-track your device.

Apoc writes that the ‘realtime GPS tracking’ app lets you use maps to see where your device is that very moment, and also allow others to know. Rafe has done a real life test (by attaching a device to his dog), but hasn’t published the results as they weren’t terribly good. He does include some screen shots of the app, though, which help show how it works.

Is this something you’d download to your device? What uses can you see for this? Head over and let Rafe know, or join in the SF forum thread.

More free apps sites

August 22nd, 2008

Having seen yesterday’s post on where to find the best free apps, gerrymoth - the Nokia Addict – has posted his own directory.

Separated neatly into categories by producer of the app, gerrymoth breaks down the list into four easy sections. Starting with Nokia-produced content, he has all the usual suspects from Chat to Maps, before moving on to externally sourced apps. There’s the Epocware set (Handy Taskman and Handy Converter included) and Google’s ‘Gaggle’ (Maps and Mail), followed by a whole host of others. All the apps you read about are listed, and this is a perfect place to start for the new user looking to pimp their device.

Are you a newbie just starting out? How is this list for you? Power users, anything that should be added? Jump over and let gerrymoth know what you think.

S60 in real life

August 21st, 2008

Tarek Esber, writing on his blog and prompted by a Tweet from a contact of his, has posted about what he really uses his S60 devices for (currently the E51 and E65).

Having spent time with an iPhone, Tarek really likes the way it is ‘easy’ to geo-tag pictures on the S60 platform, and stream video via Qik. He also missed the ability to transfer files using Bluetooth and tethering to an internet connection if WiFi isn’t available. He also felt ‘trapped having to do things the Apple way’ at times, and was happy to be release by S60 to do as he pleased.

Have you experienced the two? What are your thoughts on the benefits of S60? Jump over and let Tarek know.

New Nokia enhanced calculator – forum thoughts

August 21st, 2008

Following on from the recent announcement of Nokia’s enhanced calculator, the IPMart forum has a large thread discussing its pros and cons.

There’s a lot of thanks given to original poster cred, with the discussion then turning to its merits. [Master] says that it is better than the pre-installed Nokia calculator, but bchliu reckons it is a ‘rip-off’ of the Calcium app many have on their devices. hamzaB reports that there is already an update, probably just to iron out any bugs that may have crept into the original.

Have you tried this calculator yet? Is it better for you than others? Join in the forum discussion and let other know your thoughts.

Find the best free apps for your Nokia

August 21st, 2008

Joshua from gHacks.net has posted a very handy list of all the main places to go to grab yourself the best free apps for your Nokia.

Basically a collection of forums and sites, Joshua explains what can be found at each, and how much digging will have to be done to find the perfect app. Starting with Mosh, Nokia’s ‘portal for free apps, games, audio and images’, he goes on to take in many of the sites that will be well known to power users, but might well be undiscovered by those new to Symbian. A must-read for anyone looking to get the best out of their device.

Are there any venues you can add to the list? Where do you hang out to find your apps? Head over and let Joshua know what you think

While you’re searching for info, you may also want to check out Wapedia, as covered by Dotsisx, which helps her check the world’s collective knowledge (well, Wikipedia) on the S60 browser on Nokia devices.

Have you discovered this service yet? How has it worked for you? Head over and let Dotsisx know.

Nokia SU-8W Bluetooth keyboard

August 20th, 2008

Over on her Nokia Duck site, neoncherry has produced another of her instructional videos, this time showing the SU-8W Bluetooth keyboard in all its glory.

In the accompanying article, she details the practicalities of using the keyboard, saying it has a range of 10 meters, and will last up to 50 hours with the 2 AAA batteries. She reports that it pairs easily with Nokia devices, but it isn’t so easy to pair with their tablets. That said, it’s almost a full size keyboard that folds away into a size that will fit into a purse or ‘suit pocket’.

Have you used the SU-8W Bluetooth keyboard? How was it for you? Head over to neoncherry’s site and let her know.
