E51 vs. E71 – a forum member is torn

November 5th, 2008

Digger has posted on the AVForums pages about the decision to be made before getting a new device.

The ‘attractions’ of the E71 include the GPS, QWERTY keyboard and a larger battery, whereas the price point of the E51 makes it a contender. He also mentions that the N79 looks ‘interesting’, but the replies have been consistently in favour of the E71. chrism_scotland says the keys may be a little small, but FirstClassDVDs reckons it is a ‘fantastic’ device and wezzywebb gives it the ‘thumbs up’.

Which device would you go for? What thoughts do you have on the E71? Head over and join in the forum discussion

Getting to grips with messaging on your Nokia

October 30th, 2008

Some of these may be old hat to experienced S60 users, but Matthew has posted on Darla Mack’s site with a host of messaging tips and tricks for those finding their feet.

They include such gems as adding the IM details of a friend as a pager field in the contacts, that way you can never accidentally send them a message. Another beauty is to press the green button if you’re ever browsing your Gallery and find an image that you have to share with others. This will bring up the quick menu and let you send the image sooner than attaching it.

Have these tips and tricks helped you? Got any more up your sleeve? Head over to Darla’s site and share them with Matthew.

E51 is great for blogging

October 27th, 2008

Shaun posts on his Racer’s Dream pages about his experiences with the E51 as a blogging tool.

He starts by comparing Nokia in general with Sony Ericsson, and says that the Finnish manufacturer has ‘done so much’ to outdo their rivals by designing their interface and delivering new ‘features and possibilities’. He then goes on to say that the whole blog post was written on his E51, and the device is ‘amazing to use’ – he seems very excited at the ability to publish wirelessly from his handset.

Have you blogged from your E51 yet? Is that the primary function of your Eseries device? Jump over and let Shaun know what you use yours for.

Eseries and Nokia Email

October 21st, 2008

Roddy has posted on his blog about how he has found the Beta version of the Nokia Email service and compares it to the other push clients he has used.

He says the set up is as simple as they come and the client installs ‘smoothly’. Compared to other services he has seen in action he reckons Nokia Email is better value than the Blackberry offering, and more reliable than the ‘wait-ten-minutes’ Visto. There a few issues, but as the service is still in Beta, he expects these will be ironed out.

Have you tried the Beta service yet? How did it perform for you? Jump over and share your experiences with Roddy.

E51 – best apps?

October 6th, 2008

There is some discussion over on the Boards forum about the apps users have found for the E51, and which are best for certain situations.

cianr replied to the thread from the E51 itself using Opera Mini and reckons it is ‘very nice’, listing the apps he has installed so far. byte echoes the general support for Cabbage, saying it is ‘handy’ for wifi both at work and at home. Sioda concurs that the device is ‘great’, and asks for more suggestions from forum members, so if you have any to add to the list, jump over and get involved in the discussion.

Nokia headphone design and alarm shortcut

October 6th, 2008

Mark Guim over on The Nokia Blog has picked up on the Music Almighty Headset competition from Nokia that allows users to design their dream headset. He’s published his own, so jump over to have a look and find out more about Music Almighty.

Mark also brings to relief to weary fingers with a key-stroke saving tip for setting alarms on your S60 device. Little did he (or I!) know that by opening the clock app and simply entering the time on the number pad you can set an alarm. Neat, if not revolutionary!

Jump through the links above to leave your comments for Mark or ask any questions.

10 ‘must have’ apps for the N95

October 1st, 2008

..or any other S60 device for that matter. Keith Dsouza from Techie Buzz has posted a list for his readers, and it seems a great place to start for anyone getting their hands on a device for the first time.

The list reads like a Who’s Who of apps that others have said improve their device experience, and range from Fring to Gmail to emTube. There is an app on the list that covers every aspect of device use from video to browsing even down to calculations (Calcium). A perfect place to start for anyone looking to install their first apps on a new device?

Are there any Keith missed? Any you’d add to the list for a new starter? Jump over and let him know.

Nokia Email on the E51 – a ‘must have’

September 29th, 2008

Over on the sevendotzero pages, JJ has written about his love for Nokia Email, especially on his E51.

He says it is the ‘best email client’ he has tried, better than the native S60 one and easier to use. It has its disadvantages if the set up isn’t done correctly (too many pushes will drain the battery) and only one inbox can be displayed (either the email or SMS). As far as a beta version goes, JJ is convinced, and it goes on his ‘must have’ list.

Is Nokia Email on your list of ‘must have’ apps? Have you found any better? Head over and let JJ know.

E51 – to buy or not to buy?

September 26th, 2008

Over on the Mobile Review forum user greyghost asks whether the E51 is the ideal device for him, and the advice from fellow users makes for interesting reading.

The OP contends that Nseries devices are ‘too thick and heavy’ for him, and he doesn’t require intense multimedia usage. He wants to use it for its ‘business-like appearance’ and wonders if there are any other options. Chlettn posts that the ‘build quality/materials are great’ and the OP should go for the E51. Karim states that the device offers excellent ‘bang for your buck’, and the ground swell of opinion seems to be that this device is the right one to choose.

Would you opt for an E51? Have you got any advice for greyghost? Head over and get involved in the discussion.

E51 – a ‘powerful’ device

September 25th, 2008

The guys over at Cosk Media have had a play with the E51, and have posted their thoughts in an enlightening post.

They say it is slim with ‘classic’ looks and despite lacking the QWERTY keyboard of other devices is still ‘competent’ at handling email. The ambient light sensor that adjusts the brightness of the screen is a function they highlight as ‘ideally suited’ to the device. Battery life suffers from the slim nature of the device, but unless extremely heavy use is incurred, it should be fine.

Have you used the E51 and found the features suit you? Is there anything else you need to know about the device? Head over and leave a comment.
