N810 becomes car media center
July 7th, 2008
Internet Tablet Talk forums member Cruelkix has taken his N810 and customised it in a way never before seen.
Involving lots of moulding and shaping, as well a mysterious (to us) substance called ‘bondo’, the crazy fool has managed to incorporate the device where his car stereo used to be. The feedback he’s getting suggests that fellow forum members are in awe of his genius. Allthenameswereout says that it is ‘now much more than a car radio! It’s also a navigation system, browser, e-mail client, and so much more’. Callanish ‘salutes’ his dedication and Faz says the N810 ‘looks very happy indeed’ in its new home.
Is this best/craziest mod you’ve ever seen? Got any questions about the practicalities? Get involved in the forum thread and tell Cruelkix what you think.

Track your device from anywhere
July 7th, 2008
Rob Dunfey from The Spatial Miscellany has had a bit of time on his hands recently, and has come up with a handy way to track himself and his device.
By combining a GPS enabled device, some Nokia beta software, some HTML code and some PHP, he has made himself a workable tracking site that shows where he (or at least his handset) is. He provides a link to a working example of a map of his current location – when we looked his device was either turned off, or he was at work – but this could be great fun to see where he goes in a day. In fact, it could work extremely well for tracking lost/stolen devices, and simply uses available technology without the ‘significant investment’ in hardware that Rob says would be needed otherwise. He has tied it in to Nokia’s Mobile Web Server (MWS), which he is ‘puzzled’ hasn’t grabbed more attention.
Do you think Rob’s tool would work for tracking devices? Can you see any other applications for it? Jump over to his site and let him know.

Levelling with your Nokia device
June 19th, 2008
You can never have too many accelerometer apps on your accelerometer toting device, if only to show off the really wide range of features your N82 or N95 is capable of.
Apoc over on Symbian Freak has covered ‘Magic Level’ an app which offers three different modes to help you find straight and level surfaces whatever the situation. Horizontal, Vertical and ‘two axis’ modes all do their bit with simple ease, and while it is no replacement for professional tools, Magic Level a useful app to have on your device.

Pushing the N82
June 17th, 2008
The N82 has become a very popular device, thanks to its N95 matching internals and candy bar format. It’s always fun then, to see how far you can push a popular device…
Mike over at The Nokia N82 Blog has written up a list of the applications that he finds helps him to get the most out of the N82. Some interesting stuff that might just take in new directions with your N82.
Meanwhile, in the spirit of really pushing the device, Al Pavangkanan over at The Nokia Blog thought he’d give the GPS a workout while on a flight from Houston to L.A. - the details of his ‘giant stroke across the American Southwest‘ are a sight to behold!

N95 gallery key not wanted…
June 16th, 2008
Dotsisx over on Symbian Guru found that after using the N95 for some time the gallery key, on the side, was becoming annoying. It would get hit when not required and then of course there is the frustration of waiting for the gallery to open, and then waiting to close it again. As Dotsisx puts it ‘not convenient’.
Cunningly however, she has taken the availability of MagicKey - which many people have been using to re-map the N95’s multimedia keys for landscape game play - to kill off the gallery button problem completely. By mapping it to replicate the pencil key (the ‘least offensive’ of all the keys!) problems with mistaken key depressions are all but gone. Magic.
There’s also some interesting comments on the love/hate relationship N95 users have with the Gallery key. What are your views? Jump over to leave a comment.

Nokia Step Counter steps up
June 13th, 2008
One doesn’t typically think of their Nokia device as being too helpful in a bid to get fit. In fact with multimedia capabilities and N-gage on most devices you’d probably find it more at home on the sofa.
That view has changed recently however with the release of Sports Tracker and now Nokia’s Step Counter, which has been reviewed by Dotsisx over on Symbian Guru. She has been looking for something to motivate her to keep working out, and has been amazed at what Step Counter can offer, including a nice array of graphics representing your activity. She says it is a definite must for walkers /joggers with accelerometer capable devices.
Jump over for a nice set of screen shots and download link.
