Innovations RSS FeedMore N97 reaction
December 2nd, 2008
Since its announcement this morning, the space has been buzzing with reaction and opinion on the N97.
atmasphere has posted on his blog that the device will be the new flagship, and that the home screen is more of a ‘widget-top’ which can be wiped clean by swiping your finger. He praises a QWERTY on an Nseries device, hailing this as the ‘single unit that can handle everything’.
On the Symbian Guru forum, Dotsisx has called the announcement ‘phenomenal’ and lists the ‘firsts’ that the N97 has – first Nseries QWERTY, first Nseries touchscreen and first Nokia device with 32GB built in memory. She too is excited about the ‘customizable homescreen’, and the touch capabilities feature highly in her praise too.

Nokia N97 introduced - ‘5800 on steroids’
December 2nd, 2008
Launched in the last few minutes at Nokia World, the Nokia N97 pulls together all the features that have been asked for by voices in the space.
With a large (640×360 pixel, 16 million color) touchscreen that has tactile feedback, a slide out QWERTY keyboard and a screen that tilts to 35 degrees (using a clicking hinge), the N97 pulls together aspects of other devices in Nokia’s range. The device also contains a high quality built in Carl Zeiss camera, 30 fps DVD quality video, A-GPS and accelerometer much as you would expect from a high end device, but will also contain 64 GB 32GB of memory with 16GB card slot .
Already out in the space, Eric Zeman from PhoneScoop has some images of the device, which looks like a prototype (the handset presented was silver in color, but this version is black). He shares his hands on thoughts (calling it the ‘5800 on steroids’), so head over and have a look, ask any questions you might have, and leave your thoughts.

A marriage made in heaven?
November 27th, 2008
Dusan has shared his view of the future and it seems his ideal device would have the features of both the E and N series.
Either an Nseries with a full keyboard, or an Eseries with a high end Carl Zeiss camera with a touchscreen being a ‘plus’, this device would pack the very best from all previous Nokia releases. Dusan is wondering whether Nokia will get there first, or whether they’ll be beaten to it by a competitor.
What is your vision of the mobile future? Is there anything further to what Dusan says? Leave him a comment with your ideas.

Better box experience please, Nokia – users speak
November 19th, 2008
Darla Mack, the Mobile Diva, has voiced an opinion that is held by other major players, that of the ‘out of box’ device experience not quite being what it should be (she refers to her N96, but it could apply across the board).
She lists a few things that could be done to help users - a welcome card urging new owners to register their device, which once done introduces new services such as Ovi to the user. She’d also like to see the manufacturer citing pages and forums giving users hints and tips on how to fine tune their device. Ricky Cadden has chipped in on the comment stream mentioning a simple ‘Quick S60’ guide for newcomers.
What would you like to see in a device’s box? Any ideas to ease the user experience? Head over and join in the comments.

How Nokia can save the planet
October 17th, 2008
Titanas has posted on the Pestaola pages about his thoughts on how Nokia can make inroads into cutting down their impact on Mother Earth.
He has a number of suggestions, and if Nokia take them on board then their energy consumption will drop significantly – no bad thing. He extols the virtues of tweaking ‘the hell’ out of firmware to maximise power saving, printing a quick start guide on the inside of the box, and preloading manuals onto microSD cards to reduce paper and printing impact.
What do you think of Titanas’ ideas? Have you got any of your own? Head over and share them with him.

Nokia headphone design and alarm shortcut
October 6th, 2008
Mark Guim over on The Nokia Blog has picked up on the Music Almighty Headset competition from Nokia that allows users to design their dream headset. He’s published his own, so jump over to have a look and find out more about Music Almighty.
Mark also brings to relief to weary fingers with a key-stroke saving tip for setting alarms on your S60 device. Little did he (or I!) know that by opening the clock app and simply entering the time on the number pad you can set an alarm. Neat, if not revolutionary!

Is Nokia using this year to mature?
October 2nd, 2008
Dotsisx has posted an intriguing article over at Symbian Guru, posing the questions that many Nokia power users may have been pondering over recent months.
In a nutshell, she is considering the cycle of innovation that Nokia are going through and whether this year was a dormant, or ‘maturing’ year. If 2007 (the year of the N95) is the Innovation point, then 2008 has to be seen as the time when the ideas are developed and improved upon, although not ‘groundbreaking’. The comments left by readers agree with her, with Micky thinking that in 2009 Nokia will announce something that ‘will keep many of us quiet for a while’.
Do you agree with the sentiments expressed? Do you think there’s something amazing in the pipeline? Jump over and share your thoughts with Dotsisx.

Nokia Photos 1.5 Beta
September 24th, 2008
There’s a discussion going on right now on the Symbian Freak forum about the recent launch of the Beta version of Nokia’s Photos service.
The desktop app from the Beta Labs team allows users to ‘manage and transfer’ personal media from your device. The app will resize and reformat media so that video will play and images will not take up much room and memory, and the look and feel is very ‘Ovi-like’.
Have you had a chance to download and use this app yet? Do you think it needs some work? Jump over and let the forum know, as your feedback could influence the future development.

Nokia BH-604 headset saves the day (well, night)
September 15th, 2008
Bluetooth headphones aren’t just for using with your mobile device. They can even be hooked up to your desktop computer, assuming you have a bluetooth chip in there or a dongle to hand.
Mark Guim from The Nokia Blog thanked his iMac for having such connectivity the other night when he managed to connect his BH-604 bluetooth headphones to watch a DVD while his better half got some shut-eye free of any disturbing noise. There is a run-through of the process for anyone intrested complete with images to get you on your way.

we:offset – environmentally friendly app
August 6th, 2008
Over at The Nokia Blog, Mark Guim has posted about the latest app from Nokia.
we:offset calculates the carbon dioxide emissions from travel, and allows users to donate the appropriate amount to projects that help reduce greenhouse gases. By inputting destinations or airport codes, the app gives the user the option to donate directly from the device to the project, assuaging the guilt of long haul travel in one easy process.
Have you used this app to offset your travel? What do you think of the environmental impact of an app like this? Jump over and let Mark know your thoughts.
