N79 is an ‘apt successor’

December 3rd, 2008

Logesh Kumar brings the readers of Geeky Gizmos his thoughts on the N79, and reckons it is ‘cool’ enough to get attention at a bar and is an ample replacement for the N78.

The ‘excellent’ UI and ‘really great’ speakers get a look in, but he does mention that the camera is not quite up to the mark, despite its 5MP power. He also includes a few videos of the device, from an unboxing to the promo film, so by the time you’ve finished, there should be nothing you don’t know about the N79.

If, however, there is anything that you still need info on, head over and ask away, Logesh will surely oblige.

December 1st, 2008

Aditi Tuteja has brought us her initial reaction to the N79 on the Real Geek pages, along with a host of excellent pics of the device.

Giving her readers a real feel for the handset, the images go hand in hand with her assertion that the device is ‘a lot more’ than an upgraded N78.

Do you agree with Aditi that this is more than an upgrade? What aspects do you need to see tested in greater detail? Jump over and ask her.

N79 is ‘packed with toys’

November 28th, 2008

On the All About Symbian pages, Steve Litchfield has had an extensive look at the N79, and reckons it does its job, and does it well.

As an entry level device, the ‘robust’ build and features will prove a good introduction to S60. In a handy appendix he lists the device’s ‘wins’ and ‘loses’ against the N82, showing that this handset has some great advantages. There is a whole lot more opinion in the post, so jump over and have a read.

What do you think having read Steve’s musings? Have you got anything to add? Leave him a comment and let him know.

Launch of Nokia viNe

November 26th, 2008

The Guru reports that Nokia viNe has launched, and brings us his thoughts on the ‘prettier’ version of Sportstracker. He lists the devices that the service is available on, and comments that the fact it is not available on the N95 or the E66 is a strange one. Ani from the S60 blog also reports on the release and reckons that it is a viable alternative to a PC for sharing one’s life. He reckons it’s a ‘good job’ by Nokia and includes some screen shots of the website.

Have you used viNe yet? Do you think it’s a good way of letting others know what you’ve been up to? Jump through the links above to share your thoughts.

Nokia issued with a ‘to do’ list

November 24th, 2008

The Renegade Fanboy has come up with a wish list of improvements and innovations that he’s looking for Nokia to implement in the coming weeks and months.

Some of them are to do with devices and limiting the number of releases in each year. He reckons that there should be two N- and two Eseries per 12 months. He also implores the manufacturer to ensure that all devices are made released with USB charging. Many of the suggestions are quite enlightening, so head over and see what you think, then add any more you’re desperate to see.

N79 dropped and videoed

November 24th, 2008

What better way to start the week than watching an N79 dropped in super-slow-mo? Sushaantu shares the vid on his Real Geek pages - apparently shot at 100,000 fps, it gives a great look at what happens when your device takes a tumble.

Coupled with Ewan’s post last week from the Nokia test centre, this is a really good look at what devices can withstand. Is there anything you’d like to say, or are you speechless? Head over and let sushaantu know your thoughts.

N79 is hitting Nokia’s ‘best form’

November 23rd, 2008

Over at GSMArena, there’s an N79 review so large that it had to be written by the whole team, and is over 9 pages long.

The headlines from the review are that the N79 is an ‘attractive package’ and is one of the ‘best equipped’ candy bar devices out there. They do make mention of the slightly disappointing camera package, but this is made up for by the other features packed into its tiny frame. In fact, Sempurai on his own blog goes as far as to say it is a ‘technology powerhouse’.

Do you have anything to say about the N79? Anything that either post missed? Jump through the links to share your thoughts.

Better box experience please, Nokia – users speak

November 19th, 2008

Darla Mack, the Mobile Diva, has voiced an opinion that is held by other major players, that of the ‘out of box’ device experience not quite being what it should be (she refers to her N96, but it could apply across the board).

She lists a few things that could be done to help users - a welcome card urging new owners to register their device, which once done introduces new services such as Ovi to the user. She’d also like to see the manufacturer citing pages and forums giving users hints and tips on how to fine tune their device. Ricky Cadden has chipped in on the comment stream mentioning a simple ‘Quick S60’ guide for newcomers.

What would you like to see in a device’s box? Any ideas to ease the user experience? Head over and join in the comments.
