Is the N79 an ‘unsung hero’

June 8th, 2009

Over at The Really Mobile Project, Vikki Chowney has unboxed a replacement for her E71 (which is suffering from the ‘Feature not supported’ camera issue and has to be fixed).

What she has is an N79, and as a ‘die hard’ Eseries fan she’s interested to see what the device can do. Check out her preview video:

N79 powered round the world trip

May 21st, 2009

Three hardy souls have set out on bicycles (yes, bicycles) to complete an around the world trip, Steve Litchfield has reported on All About Symbian.

In order to keep track of where they’re going (and where they’ve been) as well as how well their bodies are coping, the team are using N79 Actives - powered by solar panels attached to their bikes. Nokia Maps will make sure they keep on the right route and they will be producing videos from each country.

How do you think the devices will match up to the challenge? Is this the right choice of Nokia to take? Jump over and let Steve know what you think.

N79 firmware update - v20.175

May 15th, 2009

Vaibhav Sharma has brought us the changelog of the new firmware update that the N79 has received, and the changes mirror those that the N85 recently got.

Among the highlights are the ability to flip the device to silence incoming calls, updated Bookmarks and a set up wizard for configuring Nokia Email. There’s also all the usual bug fixes and country specific problems solved.

Have you updated OTA yet (remember to back up before you do)? Notice any major differences? Head over and let Vaibhav know.

Barcelona with the N79: Day 2

May 12th, 2009

Dan Carter brings us the latest update from Barcelona over at World of Nokia, where he is trying to get by with just an N79 as his primary communication and image/video capture device.

He has posted lots of examples of the kind of images he has been able to snap, and reckons they are ‘more than enough’ quality to print. When he was indoors, he says that a xenon flash such as the N82 boasts would have improved photos, but adds that not even the N97 or N86 have this. There’s also video of the sights and the people of the city, including a very entertaining clown.

How do think the N79 is performing? Are the images decent enough? Head over and let Dan know what you think.

An N79 experiment

May 11th, 2009

Dan Carter is attempting to get by on a short break from World Of Nokia (to Barcelona no less) with as few gadgets as possible.

To achieve this he’s taking an N79 and using it not only for all his communications (voice and video calls and SMS), but also his primary image capturing device. He will rely on the 5MP camera to snap all that Barcelona has to offer - and will couple stills with footage from the ‘great VGA video recording. He promises to keep us updated on his progress throughout the trip, so keep your eyes on World Of Nokia to see how he gets on and let him know what you think of the N79.

N79 – A closer look

March 20th, 2009

Eugenia Loli-Queru, over at OSNews has had a look at the handset and while she got to know it she picked up a feature list longer than my arm.

If you’re not very techy, once the breathless features are over and done with we get an insight as to what she thinks about the N79, “As far as traditional candybars go, the N79 has … the perfect size.” She mentions later that the keypad is an entirely different story the Navi-Wheel is not compatible with a lot of the ‘out-of-the-box’.

The overall impression is the N79 is a decent device, if you can get over the shortcomings of the keyboard. But what do you think? Jump over and share your thoughts

N79 - ‘tricky’ but good

March 12th, 2009

Over at the N95 Users Forum, Savy has posted some thoughts on having the N79 for a while.

It seems ’sturdy and well put together’ and he really likes the look and feel of the candybar handset. The keys can be ‘tricky’ to press, but easy to get used to, and he liked the naviwheel. It needed charging every day, but he admits he was using it heavily. Overall, he’s ‘really loving’ the device…

…but what do you think? Join the thread to have your say.
