N81 RSS FeedNokia headphone design and alarm shortcut
October 6th, 2008
Mark Guim over on The Nokia Blog has picked up on the Music Almighty Headset competition from Nokia that allows users to design their dream headset. He’s published his own, so jump over to have a look and find out more about Music Almighty.
Mark also brings to relief to weary fingers with a key-stroke saving tip for setting alarms on your S60 device. Little did he (or I!) know that by opening the clock app and simply entering the time on the number pad you can set an alarm. Neat, if not revolutionary!

N81 8GB – the perfect travel companion?
October 6th, 2008
Norman John took his N81 8GB on an away trip recently, and brings us his findings in a post where he examines how the device performed in various areas.
As far as the music and gaming focuses of the device, Norman John was impressed with the N-Gage capabilities and spent a lot of time playing games and listening to his tunes was ‘a real pleasure’. The only downside was the camera, but he says the N81 made travelling less boring and is ‘a great device for a trip’.
Do you agree with Norman John? Is there another device that would make travelling easier? Jump over and let him know.

N81 8GB – does it ‘rock’?
October 2nd, 2008
Dike Edwards from My Naija News wasn’t sure about the N81 when it was first released, wary of the ‘hardness’ of the buttons.
Since then he has had the chance to use one for an extended period, and thinks it has some saving graces. The on-board memory is one of these, as is the 240×320 pixel screen (complete with the 16 million colors). He was also impressed with the battery life and the connectivity speeds, but couldn’t seem to get past the ‘cramped’ navigation keys and the relatively weak camera.
Do you share Dike’s opinion of the device? Does the N81 8GB ‘rock’ for you? Head over and share your experiences.

10 ‘must have’ apps for the N95
October 1st, 2008
..or any other S60 device for that matter. Keith Dsouza from Techie Buzz has posted a list for his readers, and it seems a great place to start for anyone getting their hands on a device for the first time.
The list reads like a Who’s Who of apps that others have said improve their device experience, and range from Fring to Gmail to emTube. There is an app on the list that covers every aspect of device use from video to browsing even down to calculations (Calcium). A perfect place to start for anyone looking to install their first apps on a new device?
Are there any Keith missed? Any you’d add to the list for a new starter? Jump over and let him know.

Thumbs up for the N82, down for N81 8GB
September 30th, 2008
Jason Harris from TechCraver has posted with another positive review for the build quality of the N82, building on the support that Dotsisx gave it yesterday.
He says the ‘high-quality components’ have survived several drops and sharing space with ‘pens, coins and keys’. Of course these have left their mark, but only when the screen is black and viewed from an unusual angle and the keypad is still ‘pristine’. On the other hand the N81 8GB gets a slating for its ‘low quality’ and ‘cheap give’ in the slider.
What do you think of the two devices? Is there a marked difference in build quality as Jason suggests? Jump over and let him know what you think.

N81 8GB – ‘satisfying’
September 29th, 2008
Shafiq Rehman has posted on his Random Act of Reality blog about the four months that he has spent with the N81 8GB, a device he finds satisfies all his needs.
He says it’s an ‘exciting’ device, ‘spiced up’ further by the inclusion of the N-Gage platform for games lovers. He finds the most exciting feature the WiFi connectivity, great for when he is out and about near public hotspots, meaning he can check emails wherever he goes. He is also a fan of the ‘state of the art slider’ and glossy finish, and the ‘excellent’ speakers.
Have you spent as much time as him with this device? What are your thoughts on the N81 8GB? Jump over and share them with Shafiq.

N81 in pictures
September 18th, 2008
Kenny Chun has written on his blog about the N81 that he has just got his hands on, and whilst the words are sparse, the images are powerful.
The navi-wheel is described as being ‘usable’ without being overly sensitive, and the camera gets a heads up too.
Is there anything you’d like more details on next time Kenny writes about the device? Jump over and let him know.

N95 camera scratches – do they matter?
September 11th, 2008
Much has been made of the lack of lens protection on some of Nokia’s devices, but Steve Litchfield from All About Symbian has gone into Myth Buster mode to try and sort out the issue once and for all.
He has taken his much-cared-for N95 which has a series of fine scratches on the lens despite his constant cleaning of the glass (what he didn’t realise was he was grinding in microscopic particles of dirt with his shirt corner) and has taken some snaps to prove his point. The point being that until there is an issue with flare from a bright light (flash in a mirror or direct sun) there is very little difference as to whether scratches on the lens are actually a problem.
Do you agree with Steve’s conclusions? What are your experiences with your device’s camera? Head over and join the comment stream.

N81 8GB inspires ‘love and hate’
September 5th, 2008
Michael Hell has posted on Symbian Freak about why he loves the N81 8GB so much, and why he thinks there is also a lot wrong with it.
On first hold, he thought the device was ‘nothing more than cheap’ due to the glossy plastic finish and the poor feedback from some of the keys. There are other build quality gripes, such as creaks and a disappointing 2MP camera. When he gets to the speakers, however, and the ‘crisp, clear’ output, he states that these are the ‘best…ever’ on a device. Along with the headset and remote, the ‘music awesomeness’ of the device is complete, and Michael settles on calling the N81 ‘a music power tool with some downsides’.
Do you agree with his conclusions? Does the N81 8GB do the job you want it to? Jump into the SF forum thread and let your thoughts be known.
