July 19th, 2008
Over on Symbian Guru, Dotsisx has been comparing the BH-803 and BH-101 bluetooth headsets from Nokia to see which is top of the tree.
There’s a full run down of how each performs in a number of categories such as comfort, battery, range and buttons as well as some snaps of the headsets from both sides to give you a good idea of their style. In the end, it’s a close tie with both having their plus and minus points, but we’ll let Dotsisx offer you her final conclusion.

Use your Nokia the environmentally friendly way…
July 18th, 2008
You might not think it, but that device in your pocket has some green tricks up its sleeve.
Writing on The Nokia Blog, Matthew Stevens talks about ways you can use your Nokia to cut down on printing itineraries, confirmations etc when going on holiday. Using the power of the PDF, not to mention online email back-ups and adequate security measures, Matthew talks through his ideas on cutting ‘travel clutter’. Jump over for the full run down.
If you do a lot of globetrotting but feel you could do more to offset your carbon emissions, you might want to check out We:Offset, a nifty app for S60 that will not only calculate your carbon emissions but allow you to offset it quickly and easily should you wish.
Have you come across any other tips to stay green with your Nokia? Jump over and leave a comment for Matthew.

N82 firmware – what you want from the next update
July 16th, 2008
Migs on his Mobile Network has produced a list of things that he’d like to see from the next N82 firmware update.
The list includes some basic tweaks to the camera unit, including the ability to turn off the red light when recording a video and (in the units in Asia where it isn’t possible currently) to turn off the camera sound when taking a snap – which apparently doesn’t even happen when the device is in silent mode. Another suggestion is to separate the photo and video galleries, and Migs reckons the ‘redundant’ button above the C could be used for this function. There are a few more, so head over to the site and find out what they are.
Do you agree with the list? Is there anything else you could add to improve your user experience with the N82? Get yourself over to the site and share your thoughts with Migs.

Nokia paper boy
July 15th, 2008
Norman John from Symbian World has had his hands on a whole truckload of Nokia goodies, and has been using as many as possible at once to help him track his Sunday paper round.
Picture the scene – it’s a hot day, you’re wearing shorts, they have no pockets. Trauma! Fear not, because the handy CP-218 wristband is quite literally to hand to solve that problem. Norman John simply slid the N82 Black into the pocket and away he went. Hooking up the BH-604 Bluetooth headphones gave him the ability to listen to his tunes on the way round, and he didn’t have to worry about wires tangling with newspapers, giving Norman John the ‘feeling of freedom’ which he likes. Couple this with the Sports Tracker app installed on his device, and he has a clear indication of his route, distance covered, speeds and a host of other info. So Nokia + real world = helpful. A great equation for anyone who actually wants to get out their and put their device to a practical use.
Have you combined Nokia products like this to help you in your life? Have you managed to integrate more gadgets than this at any one time? Head over and let Norman John know how you got on.

N82 – a critical view
July 14th, 2008
Dr. Anirudh Sharma from The S60 Blog has had his hands on a Nokia N82 and brings us his ‘critic’s’ thoughts on the device.
He starts off by calling the device ‘blocky’ with a ‘thick cross section’ which would put off customers looking for a ‘classy’ device. When he gets to the meat of the matter, though, the important stuff, Dr. Anirudh reckons the camera in the N82 is ‘the best picture quality’ he’s ever seen and it should ‘silence all the flaws’ the device has. These flaws, I presume, are the looks of the handset and the keypad, which is the ‘worst part’ of the N82 as the ‘keys are stacked on top of one another as if they were coins’. He runs through a number of other plusses and minuses, including the Micro SD Card (positive) and the PC Sync (not so). He concludes by saying the N82 has the ‘best camera’ he has seen in a device, and he reckons it would be a ‘good buy’.
All in all a fairly balanced review, but what do you think after reading it? Is there anything you would like to see reviewed in more detail in the next instalment? Head over to the site and leave a comment.

Nokia TV-Out – how can it be better
July 10th, 2008
At the newly-designed Nokia Guide, Devin Balentina has posted about how he’d like to see the TV-out function of Nokia devices improve.
Devin says he can’t work out why ‘the features have basically stayed the same ever since it was introduced’. He says the TV-out system is now ‘dated’(despite being included in the N95, N96 and N82) and provides a list of ways in which it could be improved. The first item on this list is to have a higher resolution output to match the newly updated technology of LCD and plasma screens, so the picture quality now matches what is available digitally. Devin also suggests that the TV-out has an ‘exact screen output’, so a true representation of what is on the device is seen on the screen.
Have you had any thoughts on how to get a better TV-out signal? What could Nokia do to make things better? Get over to Devin’s page and share your opinions.

N82 thoughts and tips
July 9th, 2008
Over at IT talks, Blogie has been testing out his N82, and he reckons it ‘definitely lives up to expectations’.
He tested the camera (with and without xenon flash – and I’m sure you’ll agree that it makes one heck of a difference to the snaps) and he is a fan of the specs that Nokia have thrown at the device. He’s less sure about the keypad, however, saying that if it is to be a ‘storytelling’ handset (due to the photo and video capabilities), then typing text should really have been made easier. He reckons it is ‘too compact and the keys are hard to hit’, making typing anything – and especially telling a story – difficult. That said, given the gadgets included and the ability to control your life, he’d ‘certainly recommend this’ to anyone looking for a new device.
Is there anything that you disagree with Blogie about? What do you like / dislike about the device? Head over, leave a comment, and see if anyone agrees with you.
In other N82 news, Mike from The Nokia N82 Blog has found a way to copy and paste text from an SMS or email. By selecting forward, and using the # key, Mike has discovered that text can be placed on the clipboard. He asks if anyone has found a better way, so if you have, get over there and let him know.

Keep your Hands Free for Nokia’s Challenge
July 8th, 2008
Eager to get their hands on the prizes being offered by Nokia (an N82 and BH-902 headset each week), entries are beginning to appear in the space.
Mark Guim from The Nokia Blog posts his video entry showing him and his sometime buddy Allen scrapping with sticks in a martial arts style to get their hands on a rather scantily-clad young lady. Clearly, performing this task with a device clamped to your ear would be impossible, so the power of hands-free becomes clear. Sharing his talent with the world, Mark’s entry is amongst those vying for the prize this week. Others have also picked up on the Challenge, including Vaibhav Sharma of the The Symbian Blog, who is currently deciding what to base his video on!
If you’re interested in getting involved, check out the official site, or link in through the sites above.

N82 – ‘epochal’
July 7th, 2008
With a quote like that in the headline, you know that Tam isn’t going to be bashing the N82 and calling it rubbish.
With links to the previous posts about the tests that Tam has put the device through, this article is brief, but packed with positive comment. The high quality camera – with its ‘excellent’ flash – shows other manufacturers what a device with a camera can do. The much-maligned keys also get a positive comment, with Tam reckoning they are ‘pretty useful’ in everyday usage. The only slight downside that Tam found was the ‘reddish screen’, but says you can ‘adjust yourself’ to that. ‘Epochal’, that’s the word to remember.
Do you have such a high opinion of the device? Is there something you’d change? Anything you’d like to say about Tam’s tests of the device? Head over and share your opinion.

N82 v. E66 v. G900 Flash test
July 4th, 2008
Norman John from Symbian World happened to have three devices kicking around recently and decided that the best thing to do, given this situation, was test how their camera flashes performed in low light
He gives us three example shots, all taken with all three devices, and the differences are quite remarkable. For close up objects, the xenon flash of the N82 really outperforms the others with their LEDs, with the E66 projecting a strange red colour onto the surface and the G900 simply not showing anything. The third picture, at a distance of about two metres, shows the best differences between the three devices. The G900 isn’t even in the frame, showing virtually nothing. The E66 produced ‘an acceptable result’ but the N82’s xenon wins again, and is ‘perfect’. Norman concludes that the N82 Black is ‘perfect…for bad light conditions’.
Do you agree with Norman’s decision? Have you come across a device with a better camera/flash combination? Head over and let him know what you think.
