BBC iPlayer for Nseries – video

October 3rd, 2008

Over at Nokia Creative, James Burland has posted a video showing the BBC iPlayer in action, on an N95 8GB.

Much-vaunted as coming to the N96, iPlayer actually works (in the UK) on other devices too. James walks us through the process of finding and playing a show, and whilst he says it wouldn’t be great for watching all the time, it is great for ‘catching the odd show’.

Have you tried the service yet? What are your thoughts? Jump over and let James know.

Motion capture on the N95?

July 21st, 2008

It’s felt by many that the video camera on the N95 is a very decent piece of kit considering it’s bundled inside a mobile device. Of course, it’s fine for what it does, but it couldn’t say, help you recreate the effects showcased in 2005’s King Kong… could it?

Wired’s Jose Fermoso has picked up on a very neat application that allows the N95 to be used for motion-capture of the type more often seen on the big screen. Forget Andy Serkis filling the very large boots of a giant gorilla, now you can be your own ape (or dinosaur, or aardvark if that’s what turns you on) with the tech you carry in your pocket every day.

Jump over for the full rundown and to leave your comments.

N95 8GB arrives and is revealed – silently

July 16th, 2008

Emon from Emonome has taken delivery of his N95 8GB, and brings us his initial thoughts as well as one of the most idiosyncratic unboxing videos ever seen.

Fans of Cloverfield / Blair Witch Project will revel in the silent, fast-cut, innovatively shot video which shows most things out of the box, and some details of the device. And not for Emon the tedium of describing everything as it is revealed – if you want to know what it is, just work it out for yourself. After the rollercoaster of the unboxing, the post is more straightforward with Emon taking to time to run through the features of the device that impress most. He praises the 5MP Carl Zeiss camera unit, saying his videos will now be of a ‘much, much better quality’ (we presume than the Cybershot he has been using). He only had a few hours with the device before his post, but is already ‘loving it!’

Do you agree with Emon that the N95 8GB is as good as he reckons? Is there anything you’d like to see him explore in his next video update? Head over and let him know.

N95 8GB video review

June 6th, 2008

Jason Tucker from jasontucker.us has posted a neat video covering his views on the N95 8GB.

And it’s a great balanced review. Jason starts off positive, enjoying the screen and video recording capabilities as well as using the device to do something slightly different in recording audio for a podcast - something which worked out surprisingly well. There are down sides though, transferring media to the device was ‘dog slow’ while the lack of decent Mac compatability is also a sore point for Jason and he does a good job of running through the N95 8GB’s pros and cons with honesty.

Overall, this recording is a good personal account of using the device, so jump over to watch the video and see if you agree with Jason.

Video gets interesting on Nseries

May 6th, 2008

The video recording capabilities on Nseries devices are put to great use by a lot of people. The N95 and N82 in particular come out of pockets at the most varied of moments to capture footage for posterity.

One problem faced by all however is the issue of ambient noise. There have been solutions around this issue in the past (such as using a bluetooth headset as a radio mic) but it’s left up to shelbinator over on his blog to take whats gone before and put together a great guide on adding a wired mic to the N95 to beef up your audio quality should you find yourself in a sonically hostile environment.

Jump over to see the full how-to along with video walkthrough and leave any comments you may have.

Video recording comparison (audio) of Nseries devices

April 8th, 2008

Having a camera on your mobile device is par for the course these days, and a lot of us snap away all day long because, well, we can! Of course, sometimes we also take video with our devices but the quality, especially in the sound department, isn’t always up to scratch compared to stand-alone alternatives. Or is it? Steve Litchfield tries to find out…

Writing on All About Symbian, Steve compares the N82 and N95 with the N93 and E61i in a nice simple video, that gives a great comparison of their relative merits. Jump over to read Steve’s full thoughts and leave your comments.
