N96 – a ‘straightforward upgrade’
October 6th, 2008
Indogeek has had a good look at the N96, and reckons on the face of it, there isn’t much of a difference between the new device and the N95 8GB.
There are slight physical differences in length and width, and the obvious internal improvements (upgrade from 8 to 16GB of on board memory), but indogeek reckons the form factor is very similar. The slight changes such as the kick stand for watching video and the placement of the speakers is duly noted, but an upgrade from the N95 8GB is only really necessary if you need the extra memory.
Do you think there is more to the N96 than indogeek has pointed out? Is it more than a slightly improved N95 8GB? Jump over and let your thoughts be known.

Nokia headphone design and alarm shortcut
October 6th, 2008
Mark Guim over on The Nokia Blog has picked up on the Music Almighty Headset competition from Nokia that allows users to design their dream headset. He’s published his own, so jump over to have a look and find out more about Music Almighty.
Mark also brings to relief to weary fingers with a key-stroke saving tip for setting alarms on your S60 device. Little did he (or I!) know that by opening the clock app and simply entering the time on the number pad you can set an alarm. Neat, if not revolutionary!
Jump through the links above to leave your comments for Mark or ask any questions.

N82 vs. N95 8GB
October 6th, 2008
Symbian Freak contributor ILikeMyNok has posted an enlightening article putting the N82 up against the N95 8GB to see which device commits the biggest crimes against their users.
While the N82 has no US 3G and will ‘make your fingers bleed’, the N95 8GB lacks a xenon flash (and there is pictorial evidence of what this looks like when compared to a device that does). There are the aesthetics to consider too, with different users coming down on different sides of the argument. Dust under the screen? Easily scratched? All up for debate.
The discussion continues over on the SF forum, so heading over there will give you a chance to air your views.

BBC iPlayer for Nseries – video
October 3rd, 2008
Over at Nokia Creative, James Burland has posted a video showing the BBC iPlayer in action, on an N95 8GB.
Much-vaunted as coming to the N96, iPlayer actually works (in the UK) on other devices too. James walks us through the process of finding and playing a show, and whilst he says it wouldn’t be great for watching all the time, it is great for ‘catching the odd show’.
Have you tried the service yet? What are your thoughts? Jump over and let James know.

10 ‘must have’ apps for the N95
October 1st, 2008
..or any other S60 device for that matter. Keith Dsouza from Techie Buzz has posted a list for his readers, and it seems a great place to start for anyone getting their hands on a device for the first time.
The list reads like a Who’s Who of apps that others have said improve their device experience, and range from Fring to Gmail to emTube. There is an app on the list that covers every aspect of device use from video to browsing even down to calculations (Calcium). A perfect place to start for anyone looking to install their first apps on a new device?
Are there any Keith missed? Any you’d add to the list for a new starter? Jump over and let him know.

N95 vs. N96 – the differences
October 1st, 2008
Nishit Gandhi has posted a list of differences between the N95 and the N96 on the Gadget Information pages, and has split them into positives and negatives.
Coming from the angle that the N96 is better than its predecessor, the ‘positives’ list includes the dual LED flash (as opposed to single LED in the N95), and a slightly bigger screen. The list of things that have not improved is relatively small, but highlights the lack of an infra-red port on the N96, and a smaller digital zoom on the camera.
Do you agree with Nishit’s list? What are your thoughts on the new device? Head over and let him know.

N95-4 and TV-out – who needs a PS3?
September 30th, 2008
THETRUTH from Mobile World Innovation has posted a video that shows the power of the N95-4 when it comes to gaming.
Hooking up his device to his huge 40” monster using the TV-out cables, he demonstrates the ease with which the device can be used as a replacement for a games console. He also states that the Nseries device has replaced his camera (‘for the most part’), and is his internet on the go, music player and GPS, as well as now being his gaming system.
Have you used your N95 in a similar way? What else has your device replaced in your life? Head over and let THETRUTH know.

BH-902 unboxed and reviewed
September 30th, 2008
Erazer007 on his Cellular blog has brought his readers a review of the BH-902 Bluetooth headset (which he paired with an N95 8GB), along with a host of images and detailed information.
Leaving no stone unturned, Erazer007 covers the OLED screen and controls (which provide ‘good feedback’) as well as the ‘glossy black finish’. As far as wearing the headset goes, he reckons it is easy due to its lightweight nature and sturdy ear hook, saying that everyday activities can be completed whilst wearing it.
Have you found a Bluetooth headset that works as well as this one? Have you experienced any difficulties with the BH-902? Head over and let Erazer007 know.

N95 takes on the N95 8GB
September 29th, 2008
Nexus from Symbian Freak has been taking a look at how the N95-1 fares against its bigger brother.
The newer device has all the obvious improvements as far as memory, RAM and increased performance go, but there are other subtler touches too. The placement of the audio jack is the same, but this is no bad thing, as it allows users to place the device on its side and watch video, and doesn’t get in the way of the multimedia buttons. The list goes on, but Nexus concludes that actually there is no great difference between the two devices.
What are your thoughts on the subject? Has the 8GB version made massive leaps from the original? Jump into the SF forum thread to share your views with others.
