N95 firmware updated to v30?

September 4th, 2008

Rumours abound on many sites that the N95 8GB is heading for a massive firmware update, but Vaibhav Sharma from The Symbian Blog has actually got his hands on a changelog.

He reckons that the update is currently available at Service Centers, but should come soon to NSU. Bringing full N-Gage, Maps 2.0, and improvements to the music player and FL3 as well as improved WiFi performance, this promises to be the biggest and best update for some time.

Do you think this update addresses the issues that N95 8GB users have been having sufficiently? Are you excited about the improvements it promises? Head over and let Vaibhav know what you think?

N95-4 camera – ‘impressive’

September 3rd, 2008

Gwapz from Mobile World Innovation has been testing the tenet that ‘the best camera is the one you have with you’, and brings us his findings.

He took his N95-4 to the Statue of Liberty and was concerned that his snaps wouldn’t turn out as well as other people who were using DSLR units, ‘until [he] got home and uploaded them’. The slideshow certainly shows some quality shots, and he gives ‘kudos’ to Nokia for putting such a good camera in the N95.

Have you taken any stunning images on your N95? Is there anything about the camera you still need to know? Jump over and let gwapz know.

N82 compared to the N95

August 31st, 2008

Snoyt writing over on Snoyt’s blog has found himself in possession of a new N82 after his N95 gave up the ghost while on vacation. Coming to the logical (and intuitive) decision that the N82 was the best offering for his needs currently on the market, Snoyt also set about seeing how it compares to the N95 he’d been used to.

Suffice to say the changes in form factor and build quality, as well as the xenon flash raise their heads in this in-depth comparison, amongst much else. This makes it a great starting point for those looking to upgrade their N95, or just interested in seeing how Nokia’s devices are progressing.

N95 boredom relief

August 29th, 2008

Over on the N95Users forum, member SLR has posted to say he is bored with his device and is looking for ways to enhance his experience.

Suggestions from fellow users include using the device as a satellite navigation tool, browsing the web at every opportunity and downloading simple apps like Calcium. cyaPalmOS reckons games are the way to go, and recommends N-Gage titles like Brothers In Arms. Final word goes to gordonshowers, who simply says he should try any other device for a week. That should do it, he says.

So what would you suggest SLR does? Do you agree with the suggestions so far? Join in the conversation and let other know your thoughts.

The big camera test – N82 vs. N95 vs. the rest

August 28th, 2008

Meraj Chhaya, over at Phone Report, has concluded his camera test where he pitched the N82 and the N95 against the G800 and K850i, and the final part of the review focuses on macro shots.

Along with examples of all sorts of different set ups and results, Meraj brings us his thoughts on which device handles which situation best of all. He discusses the colour accuracy changes between devices, focussing issues and light intensities captured. By changing the settings in certain situations, Meraj shows how different devices get better (and sometimes worse) results.

Which do think is the best camera device? Is there anything you’d like to know about the settings that Meraj can help you with? Head over and let him know.

Best video player for S60?

August 27th, 2008

Scott Janousek, posting on his blog, has brought his readers a digest of some of the best S60 flash video players (rather than just video file players like DivX) on the market.

EmTube gets a mention, along with screen shots and the assertion that it is Scott’s favourite – he likes the UI and says it is a ‘nice native S60’ player. MobiTubia also gets the thumbs up for being ‘simple but effective’, but FLVPlayer didn’t seem to work for him. He mentions a few other options, including an appeal to his readers asking if they have developed a video player of their own.

Can you help Scott in his appeal? Which video player is your favourite? Jump in and have your say.

Nokia Nseries vs. iPhone

August 23rd, 2008

Dameon, the Phoneboy, has posted his thoughts on the Nokia vs. iPhone debate, and comes down firmly in the Finnish camp.

Claiming that the Nokia devices – specifically the N95 8GB and the N82 – are media-generating, a game that the iPhone, with its inferior camera and ‘hard’ typing experience, can’t play. He claims the Apple product is a media consumption device –good at taking things in, but not so good at making them. He references Alec Saunders as saying that that iPhone and Nokia devices are like hammers and screwdrivers, ‘different tools that do different things’.

What do you think? Are you solely a Nokia fan or open to other devices? Jump over and let Dameon know which camp you fall into.

Keep track of your device with Phonelocator

August 22nd, 2008

Rafe from All About Symbian and Apoc from Symbian Freak have both reported on the new Phonelocator app that helps you geo-track your device.

Apoc writes that the ‘realtime GPS tracking’ app lets you use maps to see where your device is that very moment, and also allow others to know. Rafe has done a real life test (by attaching a device to his dog), but hasn’t published the results as they weren’t terribly good. He does include some screen shots of the app, though, which help show how it works.

Is this something you’d download to your device? What uses can you see for this? Head over and let Rafe know, or join in the SF forum thread.

More free apps sites

August 22nd, 2008

Having seen yesterday’s post on where to find the best free apps, gerrymoth - the Nokia Addict – has posted his own directory.

Separated neatly into categories by producer of the app, gerrymoth breaks down the list into four easy sections. Starting with Nokia-produced content, he has all the usual suspects from Chat to Maps, before moving on to externally sourced apps. There’s the Epocware set (Handy Taskman and Handy Converter included) and Google’s ‘Gaggle’ (Maps and Mail), followed by a whole host of others. All the apps you read about are listed, and this is a perfect place to start for the new user looking to pimp their device.

Are you a newbie just starting out? How is this list for you? Power users, anything that should be added? Jump over and let gerrymoth know what you think.
