N96 a ‘must have’ device

July 16th, 2008

Coja from Gaj-it has brought us his thoughts on the N96, and the impression is that he thinks it’s a ‘grown up’ version of the N95.

Opening with the fact that the device ‘exceeds [his] expectations’, Coja gives the N96 a pretty big platform, but seems to think that it is necessary. He thinks the biggest improvement over the N95 is the increased capacity for storage (16GB internal and an SD card slot for another 8GB), and reckons you will ‘never run out of space for photos, music and games.’ The automatic geo-tagging of photographs and the ‘cleverly designed’ speakers also get a positive mention, as does the ‘more powerful flash’ in the camera unit. The conclusion of the post is an interesting one, with Coja stating that this device is ‘a BIG step forward from the N95’.

Do you agree with what Coja says? Does the N96 really have an advantage over the N95? Jump over and let your thoughts be known.

In other N96 news, Norman John has posted about the Face The Task opportunity for keen N96 wannabe owners to get their hands on an exclusive limited edition numbered handset, one of only 96 to be produced. And there’s the added bonus that you help save some cute red Pandas too.

The N96 is back, and it’s causing some stir across the space.

S60 RSS feeds get the hurry up from Resco News

July 2nd, 2008

Are you a fan of RSS feeds on your device? Do you keep track of the world in this way, but get bogged down trying to keep your feeds organised? Well Amir from Mobile Space brings news of an app that may well be your saviour.

Resco News will give you a ‘boosted experience’ according to Amir, and he provides a detailed look at how to get the app set up to your liking. ‘The power of Resco News resides in its ability to organize feeds into both default and user-defined tabs’ as well as categorising, sorting and defining your RSS folders into a ‘mature’ and well-developed app. Amir is clearly a massive fan, going as far as calling the app the ‘most advanced and most user-friendly’ RSS reader he has seen.

Have you discovered Resco News yet? Are you as big a fan as Amir? Get over to his site and let him know your experiences.

In other apps news, Christexaport from Symbian Freak brings us the joyous news that EmTube is back up and running. Rejoice. Now.

N96 video online

June 30th, 2008

Apoc from Symbian Freak has posted news that an interactive demo video of the N96 is available online.

He contends that the device looks like an N81 that has been forced into the N95’s sliding form factor, and is ‘not impressed’. With the dual LED instead of a xenon flash and ‘outdated’ QVGA screen, Apoc reckons this is definitely not the flagship device that it has been touted as. In the rather large N96 thread on the SF forum, the posts following the announcement that the video is available basically comment (as evidenced by Christexaport) that this shows nothing new for the cognoscenti, and they await the release with less than bated breath.

So, ambivalence all round then. What do you think of the N96? What should it have had included? Join the discussion on the forum and let others know.

T9nav for S60 in review, plus Shozu embraces Ovi

June 27th, 2008

Zach on Symbian in Motion is a big fan of SkyeQuiKey, the app for controlling and launching a number of items by typing direct from your Active Standby screen. He has however happened upon a competitor in this arena in the form of T9nav.

Zach pitches T9nav against the benchmarks set by SkyeQuiKey and while it does the job, it doesn’t live up to his expectations. Jump over for Zach’s full review.

In other application news, Mobile Diva Darla Mack has brought the news that Share on Ovi has now been integrated into Shozu (along with 8 other services, bringing the total to 46!). Jump over for the full article.

Bh-703 headset comes up trumps

June 23rd, 2008

Alex Bhaswara at Nokia Fanboy has hooked himself into the BH-703 headset, and been very pleased with what he’s found.

Comparing the headset to his own BH-208 he found every aspect improved with the great design and longer talk-time being particular advantages. On top of this, Alex was very taken with the DSP (digital signal processing) noice cancellation technology which made using the headset while cycling a much more pleasant experience.

Levelling with your Nokia device

June 19th, 2008

You can never have too many accelerometer apps on your accelerometer toting device, if only to show off the really wide range of features your N82 or N95 is capable of.

Apoc over on Symbian Freak has covered ‘Magic Level’ an app which offers three different modes to help you find straight and level surfaces whatever the situation. Horizontal, Vertical and ‘two axis’ modes all do their bit with simple ease, and while it is no replacement for professional tools, Magic Level a useful app to have on your device.

The Nseries/Eseries conundrum

June 18th, 2008

Vaibhav Sharma over on The Symbian Blog has been wondering whether the lack of an Nseries QWERTY device, and the release of the E71 with all its updates, means that potential users might be moved to check it out over an Nseries offering?

Vaibhav thinks that while Eseries and Neries may be moving closer together, the divide is still there and features such as the 2.5mm headset jack make this clear. However, his question is where the line should be drawn, and where compromises should be made? In his opinion, he wants to at least see moves to make the core user experience of each device comparable.
