N95 8GB vs. N96

August 20th, 2008

With the imminent release of the N96, Aditi Tuteja from the Real Geek blog has posted a comparison between it and the N95 8GB.

Aditi starts out by calling the N96 a ‘slicker, stronger update’ to the older device, and goes on to justify why he thinks so. The 5MP Carl Zeiss camera is the same as the N95 8GB, but the 16GB of storage is an improvement. Aditi says that the slider hinge is ‘really well implemented’, and the device has fast responses. ‘Definitely’ an upgrade is the verdict, and one which holds ‘plenty of improvements’ – but the supposed poor battery life is given but a brief mention.

Will you be ‘upgrading’? What are your thoughts on the N96? Jump over and let Aditi know what you think of the device.

Nokia SU-8W Bluetooth keyboard

August 20th, 2008

Over on her Nokia Duck site, neoncherry has produced another of her instructional videos, this time showing the SU-8W Bluetooth keyboard in all its glory.

In the accompanying article, she details the practicalities of using the keyboard, saying it has a range of 10 meters, and will last up to 50 hours with the 2 AAA batteries. She reports that it pairs easily with Nokia devices, but it isn’t so easy to pair with their tablets. That said, it’s almost a full size keyboard that folds away into a size that will fit into a purse or ‘suit pocket’.

Have you used the SU-8W Bluetooth keyboard? How was it for you? Head over to neoncherry’s site and let her know.

Nokia release Enhanced Calculator

August 20th, 2008

At All About Symbian, Rafe has brought us news that Nokia Beta Labs has introduced a calculator ‘borrowed’ from S40.

The enhanced calculator, as the name suggests, goes beyond the standard plus and minus, encompassing as it does a scientific mode and one that helps work out loan calculations. It differs in lots of ways from both the original S60 calculator and much favored Calcium, being written in Java for one. This has caused commenters such as shoobe01 to mention they prefer a native application, but what are your views? Will you be ditching whatever you use now in favour of this? Head over and join the comment stream.

Speed up your S60 device

August 19th, 2008

Sometimes tips turn up in ones and twos in various blog posts and forum threads, but tarak on the Noeman forum has consolidated lots of tricks into one handy list.

Some will be well known to long time users, but those new to S60 might be looking for ways to speed up their experience. Hints like setting log durations to one day instead of thirty, and using numerical keys to navigate menus are old hat to most S60 owners, but tricks like keeping your firmware updated will be useful for newbies/normobs.

Can you add to the list? Is there one overriding tip that speeds up your experience? Join in the conversation and share it with other users.

Do you install to device memory or card memory?

August 15th, 2008

Matthew has posted on Darla Mack’s site about whether readers prefer to install apps to the device memory or on cards.

Taking into account frequency of use, whether it boots on start up and portability, Matthew looks at which place would be best to store apps. If something is likely to be used often, then the device memory is best for storing, as memory cards tend to use a bit more battery (how much, Matthew couldn’t quite get his hands on). Apps that load on start up of the device should be stored in the handset memory, and people with a lot of data (such as photos, videos etc.) should use memory cards for this stuff and let the device memory handle the rest.

Do you agree with Matthew? How do utilise your memory? Head over and let him know.

We:offset discussion

August 13th, 2008

On the latest All About Symbian Insight (podcast), Steve Litchfield, Rafe Blandford and Ewan Spence take time to discuss the environmental app, we:offset.

Steve recommends that Ewan doesn’t enter his schedule, as he’d end up owing the planet a fortune, but the man himself doesn’t see the point of giving money away as he can’t see how this actually reduces carbon emissions. Steve echoes the thoughts of the rant on his blog, where he says that we:offset is a good first step, but there is an awful lot else that can be done to reduce emissions.

What are your thoughts on we:offset? Do you think the app is a step in the right direction? Head over and let the guys know.

Nokia Email gets tested

August 13th, 2008

With the recent announcement that Nokia Email is moving into a more public Beta stage, there are a couple of reviews of how it shapes up emerging.

Obsidial on his eponymous blog posts that he ‘really like’ the SMS provisioning and the updated UI, but reckons the stability is an issue and isn’t happy that there is no notification when an email is received except a noise. That said, it’s still a beta, so he’s not going to unload on it just yet. Olive Peak has been having a look too, and outlines her installation experience, saying that eventually the service was ‘fantastic’. There are still some bugs, but she thinks the service is good.

Have you installed Nokia Email? What are your thoughts and experiences? Head over to either of the pages above to let others know.

Widsets news

August 12th, 2008

A couple of contrasting posts from a user just discovering a new feature on their device, and one that has had that knowledge for some time.

Saara Laaksonen has just found the Widsets application, and is enamoured by the possibilities. Impressed by the range of widgets available, she has been using Push email, Private chat, and Foreca Weather. Saying it is the ‘easiest and quickest’ way to get widgets to your device, Avatar sees the future shifting, but is happy with Widsets for now.

Have you got Widsets on your device yet? What do you use the most? Head over and let Saara know your favourite.

Nokia Chat update

August 11th, 2008

Kerni from Symbian Freak has posted with news that the Nokia Chat service has received a minor update.

The update has fixed some bugs, and contained some minor enhancements. The biggest fix, though appears to be to the battery life, with a major power consumption saving – especially when the app is set to automatic mode. Also fixed is the previous situation where links needed to be copied and pasted – now a link can be opened from the conversation.

Has Nokia Chat enhanced your user experience? How do you utilise the app? Head over to the SF forum and share your thoughts with others.
