Nokia Maps - tips and tricks

July 14th, 2008

Mark Guim from The Nokia Blog has been playing around with his Nokia device and Nokia Maps 2.0, and brings us some advice on how to get the most out of the app.

First up, Mark shares with us the best way to let your friends know where you are, by sending an SMS from Nokia Maps, making it a cinch to find your buddies and meet up. There is a slight issue with the number of steps the receiver of the SMS has to go through. He has a suggestion about how to improve the service, and reckons if his inbox could recognise the file and alert him to the fact, it would make the process ‘one click compared to four’. Mark also shares a clear step-by-step guide on how to port info from Google Maps on a computer to Nokia Maps on your device. This great find now means that as well as sending info from device to device, it can now be sent from PC to device.

Have you found these tips useful? Anything you’d like to add? Want to do something but can’t work out how? Let Mark know, and he might be able to help.

Nokia gets Chatting

July 11th, 2008

The space is awash with the news that Nokia Chat has made its long awaited debut. Many, many sites have covered the story and below we’ve tried to bring you a digest of a range of comments.

Kevin C. Tofel from jkontherun explains that it is an IM client that shows your geographic location, a bit like geotagging yourself, or you can use it to announce your arrival at a location (like a bar) to let others know you’re there. Ray at Yet Another Symbian Blog calls it the ‘twitter-esque’ app that he has been waiting for. Kirollos Fares writing on Nseries Blog calls it ‘quite innovative’ .

Symbian in Motion’s Abul gives us the run down of how the app should work, and on which devices, whilst Mike from Symbian Addict says it’s ‘really quite nice’ to see Nokia ‘trying to converge their base applications into one’. All round thumbs up then from the voices out there, and the general feeling is that this is a good move from Nokia.

Have you tried Nokia Chat yet? Have you got any comments about this beta version? Head over to any of the sites above, or go direct to Nokia Beta Labs .

Nokia 500 Auto Navigation unit

July 9th, 2008

jamespowell1989 from Talk About Nseries has posted about the Nokia 500 Auto Navigation unit that he has got his hands on.

In the unboxing and initial thoughts post, James says that he is ‘curious’ to see how the Nokia unit fares against other modules available on the market. Straight out of the box, he says the device looks ‘very smart’ and likes the 4.3” screen, which is ‘bright and crisp’ and remains readable in bright sunlight. He mentions that the keys are backlit in dark conditions by a ‘clear white light’, which helps when driving/walking in the gloom. So far, James is ‘very impressed’ with the unit’s ‘very easy to use’ UI and the ‘easy to understand’ instructions.

Have you taken the Nokia 500 for a test drive yet? How do you think it compares to other navigation units? Head over and share your thinking with James.

Mapsters take over another house

July 3rd, 2008

In their quest to take over the world (or maybe just help guide users round Nokia Maps on various devices), the Mapsters have found another victim.

Mark Guim from The Nokia Blog has found his printer has been taken over by a large Mapsters sticker, and one of the blighters has stuck itself to his fridge. Apart from the noise from the website – Mark advises hitting mute - Mapsters has made people aware of Nokia Maps and has made Mark aware of the new update of the service. The fact that he had to find out on the site - instead of being told when he starts the app – has miffed him a bit, but he’s happy with the update.

Have you been bitten by a Mapster yet? What would you like them to teach you about Nokia Maps? Head over and let Mark know…he can tell the one stuck to his fridge.

New version of Map Loader available

June 19th, 2008

A new verison of Nokia Map Loader is now available and Dotsisx at Symbian Guru has covered the news.

The latest update (now available from Beta labs) brings various upates, the most interesting of which is the ability to purchase guides and navigation from within the app rather than from your device. Dotsisx thinks the added functionality is good, but is wary of the various hoops one needs to jump through to get the new version installed.

Nokia Maps 2.0 – brings Tokyo closer to home

June 3rd, 2008

Andrew Currie has posted on his blog about his attempts to use Nokia Maps to find his favourite street in Tokyo.

He begins by reminding us that he thought the ‘killer’ feature of version 1.0 was the ability to store local information on your device. He goes on to compare the service of v1.0 with v2.0, showing N95 8GB screenshots of the street with no local info (v1.0) and the ‘handy’ new satellite image of the same intersection (v2.0). The difference is clear to see, and now the world travellers amongst us can get decent information about our environs. Indeed, he goes as far as to say Nokia Maps 2.0 is one of his ‘favourite’ S60 apps, he just wishes it was released for his E61i.

What is your favorite feature of Nokia Maps 2.0? Anything that Andrew could help you with? Leave him a comment by heading over to his blog.

Nokia Maps 2.0 – hands on in the real world

May 28th, 2008

Ben Smith from SMS Text News has posted about his experiences with Ovi, specifically Nokia Maps.

He’s posted previously about his experiences, but due to the recent update from Nokia, has had a chance to get to grips with the new version and compare it to the old one. A ‘vast improvement’ on the previous version, Maps 2.0 is ‘visually more polished with a better interface than the original’. Fair to say, then that Ben was impressed, especially with the stability of the app and the new ‘road-ahead’ 3D view and ‘better indication’ of your surroundings. Overall, Ben says this feels like a ‘competent product’ that is ‘maturing’.

What are your experiences with the new version? Have you got anything you want to ask Ben about it? Head over and leave him a comment.

Nokia Maps – out of beta

May 23rd, 2008

There is comment aplenty about the news that Nokia Maps is out of beta, and to celebrate the fact, Nokia have launched a fun new site, The Mapsters.

Jack from Experience Mobility lists the improvements made to the service under the headings Drive, Walk and Discover (just like Nokia). The updated ‘easy-to-use’ interface has a new navigation carousel, whilst the pedestrian navigation ‘efficiently walks you from A to B’. Teo at Symbian Freak has similar information and makes note of the fact that the new version is available here.

Meanwhile Neil at iGadgetLife has posted about The Mapsters, the new site that allows you to control characters across a map of Tokyo, Paris or London. Mark Guim from The Nokia Blog also brings us a video of him taking control of one of these little fellas, which you can check out.

Has Nokia Maps made your life easier? Have you got any questions about the updated service? Jump through any of the links to ask the guys your questions or leave your comments.

Nokia Maps – a good deal?

May 21st, 2008

Over on the All About Symbian forum, lovesign has expressed some love for Nokia Maps 2.0, but stirred up some feeling in so doing.

Most of the posts concern the cost of subscription with bartmanukel amongst others claiming the charges to be a ‘ripoff’. He suggests a better system of pricing, with a daily charge, instead of having to buy 30-day, 90-day or an annual price. Ratkat claims that the functionality of Maps has decreased with each update, and other options are thrown into the discussion (Route 66, copilot, Garmin, TomTom). The conclusion seems to be that Nokia Maps is actually, on reflection, quite a good, up-to-date option to take for accuracy and overall costs (compared to a stand alone unit).

Do you have any thoughts on the matter? Any questions to ask of the forum members? Head over to the discussion board and join in.
