S60 Calcium calculator app – a ‘must have’

Over at The Nokia Blog, Mark Guim has posted a vlog about his favourite ‘must have’ S60 app, Calcium.

Bigging it up as ‘one of the first applications you install’ on your device, Mark says this app is ‘fast, easy to use and free’ and is lots better than the built in S60 calculator. Personally, I would have to agree, as I use this app to convert kilometres to miles when someone has left the exercise bike in the gym on the wrong setting. It’s simple, straightforward (it just uses the D-pad) and works perfectly for quick calculations.

N95 8GB – ‘beautiful’

Daynah, from PHP-Princess.net , has grabbed herself an N95 8GB and has posted a few times about the various things she has been trying out.

Her first impressions are that it has ‘way more’ functionality than she’s used to and that she ‘can’t stop smiling’. Her initial reaction was one of thanks for the battery life, as she has used devices previously that needed charging every few hours. She loves being able to use Qik, even providing an example of a meeting in which she gave a demonstration, much to the delight of the web developers present. Her ‘second favourite feature’ is the auto rotate function of the screen, which she uses principally when web-surfing.

Nseries camera – the real deal?

Robert Scoble (aka Scobleizer) has compared the power of the N82 camera compared to a Canon 5D.

He posts two images, and challenges his readers to distinguish which device took which. He goes on to say that the SLR pics are better, admittedly, but those taken with mobile devices are ‘getting to be darn good’. He makes the point that the worst picture you’ll take is the one you don’t take because you didn’t have your camera with you. But with cameras as good as the ones in Nokia handsets, there is no excuse for not snapping away.

N95 8GB - lens cover missing = scratches

Over at The Nokia Blog, Mark Guim has posted another of his extremely handy vlogs, this time about the lack of a lens cover on the N95 8GB.

Previously, he thought people who were complaining about this omission were a bunch of ‘crybabies’, but as his video shows the lens on his device is awash with minor scratches. These marks aren’t visible until you get quite close to the handset and he’s not sure if it affects image quality, but can only suppose that it must. He asks his readers if the time has come for all devices with high quality cameras to come with lens covers as standard.

NIT tutorial – attach a flash drive to your tablet

neoncherry on her Internet Tablet School blog has brought us a video explaining how to connect a flash USB drive to your tablet.

She says that some people prefer to use flash drives rather than memory cards, and their ease of use with desktop PCs means they are more flexible than having to use a card reader. Similar to attaching a USB keyboard, a female to female adapter is needed, and neoncherry gives some helpful hints to safe use (such as having to safely disconnect before removing). With a troubleshooting guide as well as the video, there should be no reason why you aren’t merrily attaching USB drives within minutes.

Give your N95 speakers a boost

Devin Balentina’s Tip Of The Day over at The Nokia Guide is to boost the power of your N95 speakers by positioning the device differently.

Jumping on the back of the knowledge of home theatre enthusiasts who use the corners of rooms to boost their aural experience, Devin recommends that the next time you want to share music with other in a room, place your N95 upright against a wall. This will help ‘spread the sound and slightly increase the volume’, but placing the device in a corner makes the effect even more ‘dramatic’.

N82 screen brightness – a fix?

Mike from The Nokia N82 Blog has posed a question about the brightness of the screen on the N82.

He has had both an N82 Black (two different handsets, actually) and the latest silver version with the latest updated firmware, and there is a noticeable difference between devices. Mike reckons even with the latest update, the screen is ‘considerably darker’ than the N73 and N95 but some other N82 handsets have been brighter than his. Then he managed to freeze the device (memory card removal when turned on) and the screen brightness increased dramatically. Which prompted him to think that the problem is a firmware one that Nokia could fix if they wanted.

N82 first impressions

Andrew Currie has grabbed himself an N82 and is getting to grips with it gradually, sharing his experiences on his blog.

He has managed to sync it with his MacBook – it only needed a ‘quick Bluetooth pairing’ – and his data settings have found their way from his E61i over to the new device. He misses the bigger screen from his Eseries handset, and has a couple of issues with the amount of information, saying the N82 seems a ‘bit more crowded’. A quick fiddle with the fonts setting and the problem is solved. The auto rotate has been causing a couple of issues too (its ‘having trouble committing to a decision’), but he admits this could well be due to the way he is holding the device.

NIT polls and questions

There are a couple of feedback requests and polls for you to take part in today, all concerning Nokia NITs.

Firstly, thoughtfix asks on his TabletBlog what your favourite NIT development is. This could be software, hardware or partnerships. Simply leave him a comment with what you think. His ‘right-hand side poll’ asks whether you carry your NIT with you at all times. The choices range from ‘At all times’ to ‘Home and office use only’. So get involved and let him know how you use yours.

Over at Internet Tablet Talk Reggie has posted news of the Nokia N810 survey that asks users to rate all aspects of this latest NIT. From apps to support sites to GPS feedback, the comprehensive survey aims to collate the thoughts of the users in the field…and as a reward offer a multimedia speaker system and headphones to one lucky respondent.

N95 8GB is ‘nothing but great’

The guys over at Swedish Tech Report have shared their unboxing pics and initial thoughts of their brand new N95 8GB.

If you’re looking at upgrading to an n95 8gb from an original n95, or buying one straight out, this is a good place to have a look at the updated features and get started on what the device can really do. Coming from a QWERTY keyboard, T9 was ‘really fun to use’, and the screen gets a mention for ‘working great’ both indoors and out. What gets the most praise, though, is the 5MP camera (the one with the Carl Zeiss optics). The Swedish Tech Report verdict? ‘Nothing but amazing’. High commendation indeed, and it doesn’t stop there with the review going on to say that the camera takes good pictures both inside and out.
